BBC Proms schedule 2015: Weekly guide (August 14-20)

Our rundown of the upcoming week at the Proms

As the Proms approaches its halfway point, we summarise the upcoming concerts, featuring birthday bashes and a famous fictional detective.

Friday August 14

Prom 39: Mozart – The Abduction from the Seraglio, 19:00

Glyndebourne Festival Opera drops by the Proms for its yearly appearance helps to perform Mozart’s fantastical The Abduction from the Seraglio. Robin Ticciati conducts.

Saturday August 15

Proms Saturday Matinee 3: Alina Ibragimova and Apollo’s Fire, 15:00*

The third Saturday Matinee welcomes the always lively Apollo’s Fire orchestra, under the directorship of Jeannette Sorrell. The wonderful Alina Ibragimova makes yet another Proms appearance.

Prom 40: Sibelius – Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2, 19:30

This year marks 150 years since Sibelius’ birth. In commemoration, all seven of his symphonies will be performed across three concerts. This is the first.

Sunday August 16

Prom 41: Sherlock Holmes – A Musical Mind, 15:30

The mysterious world of Sherlock Holmes is musically recreated at this Prom. Music from Lassus to Patrick Gowers will conjure images of the fictional sleuth. Mark Gatiss, from the TV hit Sherlock, will be there, too.

Prom 42: Sibelius – Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4, 19:30

The journey through Sibelius’ symphonies continues, with Lithuanian violinist Julian Rachlin leading the way.

Monday August 17

Proms Chamber Music 5: A Sondheim Cabaret, 13:00*

Another birthday celebration, this time for the master of musical theatre, Stephen Sondheim. Compositions from some of his most loved productions – from Sweeny Todd to Company – will be performed.

Prom 43: Sibelius – Symphonies Nos. 5, 6 & 7, 19:30

Rounding up the run of Sibelius are his final three symphonies. Osmo Vänskä, whose past work with the symphonies has been widely acclaimed, is the conductor.

Tuesday August 18

Prom 44: West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and Daniel Barenboim, 19:30

This prom was one of the highlights picked out by the Standard’s critic, Barry Millington. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, who Millington calls “inimitable”, will be joined by the returning Daniel Barenboim.

Wednesday August 19

Prom 45: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Charles Dutoit, 19:30

Three decades later and Elisabeth Leonskaja is back at the Proms. The great pianist is in esteemed company, too, as Charles Dutoit conducts.

Thursday August 20

Prom 46: Danish National Symphony Orchestra, 19:30

Rounding up this week’s guide is yet another birthday bash thrown in honour of Nielsen. Three Motets, Hymnus amoris and his second symphony are among the pieces to be played.
