Susannah Butter finds a discreetly sumptuous hideaway in a new hotel in central London
20 February 2014

The buzz: A clubhouse-style bar tucked away off the courtyard of a splendid 1914 Belle Époque building that American-based, Hong-Kong owned “ultra luxury” group Rosewood Hotels and Resorts has spent £85m on turning into its newest five star hotel.

The deal: Discreet sumptuousness. It’s like a fun library, with jewel-coloured chairs, bookshelf-lined walls and live music from a grand piano. The best seat in the house is a fireside couch.

Good for: Escaping the rush of central London, impressing a date or treating a loved one.

Order: Charming head bartender Oscar has an extensive selection of gin and whiskey, as well as some craft beers on tap. Cocktails start at £10.50 and popular choices are the Seine River Fizz – Grey Goose vodka, Domaine de Canton Ginger, Lime Juice and basil leaves added to Fentiman’s Victorian lemonade and bespoke Elderflower foam, or the Thyme Out – Bombay dry gin and herbs served in a miniature teapot.

By the way: The Indian food-inspired bar snacks are wonderful. Try the fried lobster momo parcels with smoked tomato chutney. Look out for resident dog, a little Westie.
