Nell Gwynne is cosy and full of character

On the face of things it's Ye Olde Worlde Pubbe, but, the Nell Gwynne is not as touristy as its location and cosy size would make you think.

Sure, it's dimly lit and makes the most of its historical associations, but it still has the feel of a locals' pub.

Friendly bar staff and decent fare add up to an honest, busy boozer. Even though it's about the size of a phone box inside, it's usually a better bet than some of the other tourist traps nearby (beware the hellish stairs to the toilets though).

A choice of ales, friendly staff and an excellent jukebox (often heard to be playing 90s classics) all add up to make this a cracking little a place, especially out of peak hours.

Certainly the Nell Gwynne is one of the more characterful boozers in Central London. As an aside, for a last couple of years we understood that it has been under threat from redevelopment.

However, we have recently heard that this risk may have now subsided somewhat. We'll keep you informed of any developments.
