Prince parties in London: Where to celebrate the iconic musician around the city

London, let's go crazy

‘Dearly beloved/We are gathered here today/To get through this thing called life..../Let's go crazyLet's get nuts’

So preached Prince in the faux-gospel beginnings of Let’s Go Crazy. The diminutive sex machine might have been an enigma – that and the word ‘genius’ appear next to his name so often they seem to be a surname of sorts – but one thing the world knows is that Prince was funky as hell, and Prince loved to dance.

Do the man proud and get out to one of the tribute parties across the capital, listed below. And remember, when Prince screams out, on Controversy, “Life is just a game / We’re all just the same / Do you wanna play?”, the only reply is to scream back “Yes!”

  • We Wish U Heaven
The Nines, Unit 9A Copeland Park, 133 Copeland Rd, SE15 3SN, April 22
Prince in Peckham all night courtesy of DJ Nick Garcia. As well as all the hits, they’re promising rarities and even “never before heard” cuts. Get funky now.
  • 100% Prince: A Purple Tribute
    The Red Lion, 13 St Mary's Rd, Ealing W5 5RA, April 22
DJ Tom Green will be making sure everyone goes crazy deep into the night with a Prince-heavy set at this Ealing spot.
  • Ultimate Power: Purple Reign
Electric Ballroom, 184 Camden High St, NW1 8QP, April 22
Prince played this venue a number of times, usually as secret gigs, so it’s no surprise they’re hosting a tribute to the Purple one. Ultimate Power celebrates power ballads, so expect to get weepy to Purple Rain.
  • When Doves Cry: Celebrating The Life & Legend Of Prince
    Shacklewell Arms, 71 Shacklewell Ln, E8 2EB, April 23
The Shacklewell Arms is an appropriately lively place for an all-night party, so they’ll be playing the best of Prince, and the best of 80s pop. The night raises money for War Child.
  • Wet Satin Press: A Tribute Night to Prince
    VFD, 66 Stoke Newington Rd, N16 7XB, April 23
Wet Satin Press love Prince, and love Satin. They’ll be tapping into the funky side of Prince, playing his best floorfillers and any number of great soul and disco cuts. Free entry if you’re wearing Satin.

  • Purple Rain: Celebrating Prince Rogers Nelson

  • Diamonds & Pearls: Superstore remembers Prince Dalston
    Superstore, 117 Kingsland High St, E8 2PB. April 26
You know the score by now: Prince, Prince and more Prince. Dance until you drop.
  • This is a Tribute: Prince Party
Bloomsbury Lanes, Tavistock Hotel, Bedford Way, WC1H 9EU, April 29
One well worth going to as it’s no hastily thrown together event but something that’s been in the works for months. Go for Purple cocktails, a Prince shrine, karaoke, his biggest hits and plenty more. In short, it’ll be ultimate Prince.
  • Purple Reign: Prince Paaarrrrty & Purple Rain Screening
    205A Lower Clapton Rd, Clapton, E5 8EG, April 29
Another Purple Rain screening, followed by another funky get down.
  • I Wish U Heaven: A Music & Film Tribute to Prince
Genesis Cinema, 93-95 Mile End Rd, E1 4UJ, May 6
Not just Purple Rain, but his 1987 concert film ‘Sign O’ The Times’ too, then live music, DJs spinning and general good times. Genesis is an independent place and one well worth supporting.
  • Burning Down The House: Purple Rain
    VFD, 66 Stoke Newington Rd, N16 7XB, May 7
VFD celebrating again, with Burning Down The House, just announced to be a Prince tribute. Come in purple (seriously, it’s the dress cost), to here a mix of hits, classics, hidden album tracks and plenty of old-school funk.
  • Fromage on Ice: When Doves Cry
Alexandra Palace, Alexandra Palace Way, N22 7AY, May 27
Prince slid about the stage like he was skating, so now you can do your best impression… on ice. The team behind Club De Fromage and Feeling Gloomy are hosting a Prince party at the Ally Pally ice rink, with live DJs putting a focus on Prince.
  • Prince Special
    Old Queen’s Head, 44 Essex Rd, N1 8LN, June 25
The Old Queen’s Head has been planning this one for a while now, but they’re planning to make it even bigger and better. Alongside DJs playing until 2am, there’ll be Prince karaoke, and whoever is dressed most like his Purple Holiness will get free drinks all night.
