New Year's Eve Fireworks in London 2019: Where to watch in the capital for free

1/6

Where did 2019 go? The last year has passed in the blink of an eye, disappearing in a daze of Brexit uncertainty, heated climate change discourse, Royal controversy and one of the most unpredictable general elections in a generation.

It's coming to a close, though, with the London's New Year’s Eve fireworks display on Tuesday set to be a welcome distraction to everything that's gone on. And to see it properly it's best to venture outside, since the telly never does them justice after all.

Official tickets for the fireworks are all sold out and, if you don't have a ticket to the fireworks, you won't be able to get into the official viewing zones. Fortunately, there are plenty of places to enjoy the glorious celebrations on the cheap.

In fact, it won't cost a penny and savvy savers can also enjoy free public transport from 11.45pm to 4.30am on all TfL networks.

City Hall have flagged that Waterloo Bridge will be closed to pedestrians from 4.30pm and all traffic from 7pm on the night itself, with roads closed between Oxford Street to Lambeth Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge to Vauxhall Bridge. As always, if bridge and roads are open, it's important to be wary of any traffic and overcrowding, and to be mindful of your fellow Londoners.

Start your 2020 fitness regime a few hours early by climbing up Ally Pally’s enormous hill. It’s a harsh incline but the spectacular city skyline that waits at the top really does make the trek worth it. Anyone who has graced the grounds on Bonfire Night knows that a number of other city firework displays are visible from the top and it’s an enchanting sight.

At 76 metres up, the top of Primrose Hill offers near unrivalled views across London. Get there a little early to soak up the last few minutes of 2019 and to enjoy the capital illuminated after dark. In order to secure a space, it’s best not to leave it too late and there are plenty of pubs to grab a warming tipple in beforehand. Stylish gastro-pub The Princess of Wales is hosting a Great Gatsby-style party and could be the perfect place for cracking open a bottle of fizz, while the Queens on Regent’s Park Road does some pretty great cask ales.

Nearest tube: Camden, Chalk Farm (though beware, this station will be closed by 8pm).

Parliament Hill and Hampstead Heath

There’s lots going on at Parliament Hill on December 31. Not only does it offer great visibility of London, but some people bring their own fireworks too. Venture further down to Hampstead Heath for equally breathtaking views from its high vantage point. Bring a bottle of bubbles and watch the city come alive with colour.

Great viewing spots are not exclusive to north of the river as this little hangout in Brockley proves. The green space stands 175 feet above sea level, making it a prime firework viewing spot. The roads surrounding Crofton Park tube station are home to a number of great pubs and bars including the London Beer Dispensary — ideal if you need to kill some time beforehand.

London's bridges

As flagged, Waterloo Bridge will closed to pedestrians from 4.30pm and all traffic from 7pm but any closures are yet to be confirmed. Though they can get extremely, extremely busy – be careful – Southwark Bridge and Millennium Bridge offer a view of the action, though it's a little obstructed. If you're not there early, beware you'll struggle to find a place among the crowds.

Lambeth Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge boast slightly more wiggle room, at the cost of being further away.

For anyone braving the bridges don’t forget to wrap up extremely warm — starting the new year with a cold is never ideal, after all.
