Zoe Ball has praised Coronation Street for their male suicide storyline surrounding Aidan Connor’s exit from Weatherfield.

Last week, Shayne Ward said goodbye to Corrie as his character took his own life, alone in his flat.

On Wednesday, fans watched with devastation as his father Johnny – played by Richard Hawley – discovered his son’s body , with the hour-long episode highlighting the impact Aidan’s passing had on the community.

Ball, whose partner Billy Yates took his own life, praised the ITV soap after “finally braving the episode”.

She wrote: “Finally braved the Aidan storyline on @itvcorrie Lots of tears.

“Gail’s speech, Johnny’s grief, Carla’s slow melt. Brilliant writing, acting & directing. #MentalHealthAwarnessWeek.”

Ball's partner Yates was found dead at his home in South London last year.

Earlier this week she posted a poignant tweet to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, in the wake of Frightened Rabbit star Scott Hutchison's death.

Ball said: “Sending love to the FR family & their fans. #mentalhealthawarenessweek

“If you’re struggling - reach out if you can. If you’re Concerned about someone you love give them a call, sit & listen. Keep loving. There is always HOPE x.”

Earlier this year, Ball cycled from Blackpool to Brighton to raise money for Sport Relief and raise mental health awareness, also presenting her own documentary about her personal experiences.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
