ITV know a thing or two about a crime drama – and when Unforgotten debuted in late 2015, it received critical acclaim.

Now the show is returning for a second series, once again delving into a murder that happened decades ago.

Here’s what you need to know about Unforgotten, Series 2.

1) Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar are back

The first series of Unforgotten thrived on a tight story, and engaging lead characters DCI Cassie Stuart and DS Sunny Khan, played by Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar.

Both are returning in Series 2 – and they sound like they had a blast filming.

“It was great to work with Nicola Walker as Cassie again in terms of the characters, but also personally,” said Bhaskar. “I think she’s absolutely wonderful and great fun to hang out with. I absolutely adore her.”

2) There’s a mostly new cast

While the central duo are back, a new case means plenty of new supporting characters.

“We have completely new people,” says Walker. “All bringing their best game with them. Yet again we have got fantastic actors. Because of the nature of the story they have to come in at a pitch. And they all do.”

3) The case causes a divide between Sunny and Cassie

This series sees a body locked in a suitcase wash up in the River Lea, having been preserved for many years. The case leads to four key suspects – and causes a rift between Sunny and Cassie.

“[They] have quite strongly held differing opinions this time around,” says Bhaskar. “There’s a degree of validity to both sides of that. It’s a little more tense between them than it was the first time around.”

Walker adds: “It’s not that they fall out. In other working environments maybe it wouldn’t be quite as complicated.

“They are absolutely in opposition to each other. But they have to go to work. They need each other.”

4) It was filmed around the UK

The discovery of the body was filmed on location by the River Lea, while the series also shot on location in The Cotswolds, and along the promenade in Brighton.

5) It’s about keeping your secrets hidden

With its emphasis on finding answers to historic murders, Unforgotten deals with some interesting criminals.

“We are all fascinated by what makes ordinary people cross the line and take a life, but what is almost more interesting, is how people manage to then cover such a crime up for so many years,” says writer Chris Lang, “how they can live a whole life, without it obviously showing that 20, 30, 40 years ago they did this terrible thing.”
