This Morning served up “TV gold” after Phillip Schofield interviewed a ghost named Ray while dressed as a circus ringmaster.

The ITV show celebrated Halloween with a “scare-ground” theme featuring a fortune teller, zombies and a carousel.

Schofield, and temporary stand-in Rochelle Humes, left viewers confused after welcoming Amethyst Realm and her ghost fiancé Ray onto the sofa to talk about their recent engagement.

Amethyst, who has previously appeared on the flagship show, introduced her husband-to-be by gesturing to the apparent empty space on the sofa.

Schofield said: “Well, Ray it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

He then attempted to communicate with Ray, asking: “What was it about Amethyst that made you fall in love, Ray?”

On being met with silence he asked Amethyst to step in and she explained it was their “connection as soon as we met”.

Schofield nearly scared him off after asking if they were planning on having “ghost babies,” to which Amethyst replied: “Maybe. I don’t want to scare him off.”

Viewers struggled to get to grips with the concept of a spiritual marriage with many claiming to be “lost” while others joked she should make more of an effort to get to know her fiancé’s past.

Amethyst claimed she met Ray, who got his name from appearing to her as a ray of light in a photo, in Australia at the start of the year.

She said he “he feels very ancient and very wise” and that he was desperate to take her to Weston-super-Mare.

He proposed to her last weekend, which also marked the first time she had heard him speak.

“It sounded like it was echoing through the whole cave,” she said. “He asked ‘will you marry me?’.”

He has yet to buy her a ring as he is being “picky”.
