Christmas can be an expensive time of year – all those presents, the travelling, the mountains of food.

Still, if you thought your festive supermarket shop cost a small fortune, wait until you see how the super-rich in London do it.

Following on from Channel 4’s The World’s Most Expensive Food documentaries, in which you watch in horror as life-altering amount of money are frittered away on obscenely lavish meals, this Christmas special shows how far millionaires and billionaires will go to get that truly special gift.

How about something practical, like a mushroom-shaped USB stick (that happened to be encrusted with diamonds) for almost £23,000? Or if that’s a little bit too cheap, there’s a light-up octopus bracelet for £450,000.

Elsewhere, there’s Christmas food – including a reindeer-themed tart, where the nose is actually a 7-carat ruby (for a cool £475 per person), or an £8,888 cocktail made with vintage Cristal champagne and edible (but tasteless) gold leaf.

Decorations can be pricey too – the real attention-grabber is a diamond-encrusted star tree topper. Centring upon a 5-carat D Flawless diamond, the thing costs £615,000.

It’s enough to make gold, frankincense and myrrh look bargain-basement cheap.
