We’ll have to wait another night until Red Nose Day proper comes along and Ed Balls does his La La Land dance (yes, that’s happening), but for now there’s the Red Nose African Convoy.

The one-hour special is a welcome teaser for the main event, with six celebrities venturing across Kenya and Uganda on an epic road trip for Comic Relief.

Reggie Yates, Michaela Coel, David Baddiel, Hugh Dennis, Russell Kane and Katy Brand take on the challenge of driving The Northern Corridor – one of the world’s most dangerous roads.

Across the six day trip, they drop off various items that have been funded by Comic Relief’s charity efforts.

There’s plenty of laughter along the way, but the ambitious journey is not exactly plain sailing.

“A couple of years back an online publication rated this road as the fifth most dangerous road to drive on in the world,” warns the group’s security chief.

“Everything is on that road. Buses, trucks, lorries, trailers, zebras, antelopes, baboons. Last year alone we had more than 3000 fatalities on this road.”

The work is worth it though – along the way, the convoy delivers ultrasound equipment to help expectant mothers, a supply of bikes for a widow’s association, and mosquito nets to school.

Despite a few tribulations along the way (Hugh and David find themselves going the wrong way down a one way street), it’s an uplifting journey.

Reggie and Michaela’s car looks especially fun, blasting hip-hop and soul music on the road. Meanwhile there’s flatulence in Russel Kane and Katy Brand’s vehicle.

The Red Nose African Convoy is a welcome reminder of the good work Comic Relief does – and an ideal primer for tomorrow’s full BBC broadcast.
