ITV’s new current affairs and chat series The Nightly Show has dropped more than half of its viewers in its second episode.

The series has been launched in the 10pm slot usually occupied by the ITV News, and has been styled after popular American late night shows.

While the opening instalment, presented by this week’s guest host David Walliams, saw nearly 3 million viewers tune in, it was not well received by audiences.

Hitting out on Twitter, the episode was slammed as ‘awful TV’, while one viewer claimed they ‘switched off after ten minutes’.

It seems they weren’t the only one to do so. In its second episode, The Nightly Show attracted just 1.36 million viewers, a drop of around 50% on the debut.

The ITV News has also reportedly taken a hammering in its new time slot, with reports claiming their Tuesday night broadcast only brought in approximately 900,000 viewers.

The Nightly Show is expected to feature a new host each week. Next week will bring in comedian John Bishop, while future hosts are set to include Gordon Ramsay and former Bake Off presenters Mel & Sue.

The first episode of The Nightly Show followed immediately after the Monday launch of Broadchurch Series 3.

The return of David Tennant and Olivia Colman as DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller proved hugely popular, drawing in an audience of 5.8 million viewers on the initial 9pm broadcast and being hailed as 'gripping' by fans.
