Netflix leaves fans dismayed by removing The Grinch on first day of December

December is the universally acceptable time to start watching your favourite Christmas movies again - so it is no surprise that fans have been left outraged after discovering that The Grinch is no longer on Netflix.

The movie - which has the full title How The Grinch Stole Christmas - was available to watch on Saturday (November 30) but fans who went to watch it on Sunday (1 December) were stunned to find it noticeably absent.

Obviously, many rushed straight to Twitter to ask what has happened.

One person said: "Netflix took the Grinch off today. I watched it last night. It's my favourite film of all time right, but today is the first of December and they took the Grinch off."

“On the first day of december, netflix removed the grinch from its streaming services,” said a disgruntled user.

Another user asked: "How is it that I pay for FIVE different streaming services and not one of them has the Grinch available in December???"​

Someone else added: “Netflix removing The Grinch on the first of December is just further proof that we're all just living in a computer-generated social experiment.”

The hit film was released in 2000 and sees Jim Carrey star as the title character, while a young Taylor Momsen plays Cindy Lou Who, the Whoville resident who him.

According to a post on What's On Netflix, shared on November 25, The Grinch was always scheduled to leave Netflix UK on December 1.

Netflix's Help Centre has explained that to its users that TV shows and movies often leave the platform if they do on renew the license.

It reads: "Though we strive to keep the content you want to see, we acquire licensing rights for TV shows and movies for a certain period of time - not indefinitely - so some titles do leave Netflix. If a TV show or movie you love is leaving, it indicates that our licensing agreement with the content provider is about to end.”

They added: “If a TV show or movie is renewed, it remains on our service for you to enjoy. If a TV show or movie is not renewed, we'll give you a heads up on our website that it's about to expire.”
