Suranne Jones has said that she’d consider returning to Coronation Street after 14 years away from soap.

The award-winning British actress hinted that she could be reprising her role as Karen McDonald in the show that launched her career as part of a Comic Relief special.

Jones left Weatherfield back in 2004 following a dramatic Boxing Day showdown with husband Steve McDonald.

“I don’t have time to keep up with Corrie but I’m friends with Jennie McAlpine and Anthony Cotton so I do catch up,” Jones told The Sun.

“But I didn’t know Steve had a baby - that is news to me and I am gobsmacked.”

Jones, who has carved out a successful post-Corrie career in shows including Doctor Foster and Scott and Bailey, said that she’d be keen to see Karen return to have a final showdown with Steve.

“If it was for a good cause and we were going to raise a lot of money, I’d definitely consider it for Comic Relief,” she said.

Last month Jones picked up the National Television Award for Best Actress for her role in the second series of Doctor Foster.

She’s set to return to screens next week in Sky Atlantic’s brand new drama, Save Me.

Coronation Street veteran Sean Wilson recently confirmed that he would be returning to the cobbles as Martin Platt after 13 years away.
