Suranne Jones has left Doctor Foster fans disappointed after revealing that there are currently “no plans” for a third series of the hit show.

The award-winning actress, who picked up a Bafta for her role as the vengeful Gemma Foster, has admitted that the cast and crew are currently “too busy” to work on the show again.

The second series of the BBC drama ended on a cliffhanger, in which Gemma’s teenage son disappeared following a dramatic confrontation with her cheating husband, leading fans to believe that a third series was likely.

“There are no plans because everyone is busy and I am working all of next year so I just don't know,” Jones told Graham Norton on this week's show.

“I've never done a show before where people got so behind it. You couldn't binge watch it so I think it had that 'water cooler' effect and people loved it.

“People are quite disappointed that I am quite nice when they meet me and not mad like my character.”

Show creator Mike Bartlett recently gave fans hope when he teased that the “door is open” for more Doctor Foster, leaving a question mark over the show’s future.

The first series of the show was a huge hit with viewers, after Jones’ character dramatically sought revenge on her cheating husband.

Series two took an even darker turn, with a vengeful Gemma destroying her ex-husband’s life and leaving him on the verge of suicide.

Jones is next on screens in Sky Atlantic’s new drama, Save Me, which is set to air early in 2018.
