Piers Morgan compared Gemma Collins to boxing legend Rocky Balboa as he leapt to her defence after she took a tumble on Dancing On Ice.

Morgan has been firmly in Collins’ corner on the skating show, praising her spirit and taking her side during her recent spat with Jason Gardiner.

And the Good Morning Britain anchor lavished praise on the star once more on Monday’s show as he applauded her “gumption” after she got up and carried on despite face planting the ice on Sunday night's live show.

Playing the Rocky theme tune as they chatted, Morgan said: “That took balls, I'm serious. You fall on national TV, you fall flat on your face on the ice. This is why I don't ice skate, I couldn't do what she does.

“Gemma Collins, evoking her Rocky Balboa last night. And I am in Team GC, all the way for me.

“I know we’re unlikely bedfellows, in every sense of that phrase, but I think she’s got some gumption and I like people with some gumption.”

As co-host Susanna Reid reminded him that Collins had hung out with them at the National Television Awards, Morgan revealed that the reality queen referred to him as her “knight in shining armour”.

He added: “She gives it a good old go. I think we have a connection, me and The GC.”

Last week, Morgan posted a snap of him and Collins – with Collins planting a massive kiss on his cheek – backstage at the NTAs.

The broadcaster captioned the picture “every cloud” in reference to his bitterness at having lost out to This Morning for Best Daytime Show.

The presenter was stony-faced as Holly Willoughby, Phillip Schofield and the rest of the team rushed up to the stage at London’s O2 Arena to accept their award for the ninth year running.

During Sunday night’s Dancing On Ice, Collins hit the deck during her Celine Dion skate, with partner Matt Evers rushing to pick her back up and finish off the routine.

Collins fought to hold back her tears as she hugged Evers before managing a smile for the audience and getting their highest mark of the series so far, with 16.5.

The pair sailed through the public vote to secure a place in next week’s show, with Didi Conn becoming the latest celebrity to leave the show.
