Piers Morgan found himself praising the Primetime Emmy Awards for not “bashing” President Donald Trump.

The 70th annual event tackled the #MeToo movement and Hollywood’s diversity issue, but largely avoided swipes at Mr Trump.

Discussing the ceremony on Good Morning Britain, Morgan said: “Actually there was very little Trump bashing. He barely got mentioned so well done Hollywood.

“You finally managed to have an awards ceremony about your industry without endlessly bashing your president.”

Few jokes alluded to the President who has previously been heavily targeted at the Golden Globes, Academy Awards and last year’s Emmys which saw host Stephen Colbert, actor Alec Baldwin and screen legend Jane Fonda take aim among others.

John Oliver addressed the lack of “Trump bashing,” at this year’s event, joking it was a bid to stop viewers taking a swig every time they heard the politician’s name mentioned.

“We are just trying to keep America sober,” he told reporters backstage. “Everyone needs their wits about them right now. You can’t drink the pain away.”

He added: “Has his name not come up once? Wow. That’s something.”

Asked if he thinks the lack of criticism shows the US is “moving on,” he replied: “No it f****** doesn’t. If anyone takes away from the Emmys that we are moving on past the presidency that we are currently half the way through or a quarter of the way through we are totally f*****.”

Emmys host Colin Jost made a subtle dig at Mr Trump in reference to the Obamas having a production deal with Netflix, saying: “My dream is that the only thing they produce is their own version of The Apprentice. And it gets way higher ratings.”

Full Frontal host Samantha Bee also made a comment when asked about the shows she has been watching. “I’ve been watching this very shocking dystopian drama called The News,” she said.

Referencing Robin Wright as President in the upcoming series of House of Cards, she continued: “It’s on Season 9,000. It’s getting darker and darker. They really need to re-cast the lead – I’d prefer Robin Wright.”
