BBC Three has unveiled a brand new logo ahead of its move to become an online-only service.

Continuing the magenta colour scheme that the channel has long been associated with, the new logo features a roman numeral-inspired design - and a lot of people are already taking the mick out of it.

The updated logo was spotted on the BBC Three Twitter page, and also features on a trailer for the channel’s upcoming programming.

However, the channel itself will not be around for long – it has been confirmed to move solely online by the end of February 2016, with its programming available to access through BBC's iPlayer service.

Not everybody is impressed with the new logo - it has been compared to this cringeworthy rebrand scene from the BBC's self-mocking satirical comedy W1A.

Elsewhere, Twitter users have noticed a likeness to everything from Plan B’s album cover for iLL Manors to the title sequence in classic comedy series Up Pompeii!, and the original Metal Gear Solid videogame.

The decision to no longer air BBC Three on TV has been controversial, with the channel responsible for cultivating classic comedies like Gavin & Stacey and The Mighty Boosh and regularly airing favourites including Don’t Tell the Bride and Family Guy.

BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh wrote in a blog post: “BBC Three is not closing, we are reinventing online. We will not be a scheduled 7pm to 4am linear broadcast TV channel but we will be everywhere else giving you the freedom to choose what to watch when you want.”
