Netflix has renewed dark comedy Dead to Me for a second series.

The streaming service confirmed that the hit series will return for a second outing at a For Your Consideration Emmys panel for the show last night.

The drama’s official Twitter account later corroborated the news, sharing a photo of stars Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini posing on the red carpet with the caption: “These two. Season 2. Coming soon.”

The show follows the recently widowed Jen (Applegate) who is determined to investigate her husband’s death in a hit-and-run and strikes up an unlikely friendship with the free-spirited Judy (Cardellini) at a bereavement support group.

As the two women bond in their grief, Judy desperately tries to hide a shocking secret from Jen that could cause her world to fall apart.

The show also stars James Marsden, Ed Asner and Brandon Scott, and has garnered positive reviews from fans and credits alike, gaining an 87 per cent rating on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

Dead to Me marks Applegate’s first television role in seven years. Discussing her decision to return to the small screen in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the actress said: “It literally took them like dragging me out of my semi-retirement, because I was very happy with my kind of not showering life and doing what I want, and just raising my daughter.

“So, what was it? It was a lot of things. It was really a unique premise and show, and I had known Liz Feldman and really loved her as a human being.”

A release date for the forthcoming series is yet to be confirmed.
