After a week of knockout rounds, we finally have our eight MasterChef semi-finalists – including the likes of twirly-moustached Stuart, nervous mortgage advisor Jen, and actor Annie.

Poor Natasha couldn’t quite do enough to make it into the last eight contestants, but the end of the knockouts saw Jane, Liz, and Jack deemed “outstanding” by judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode – so they could be the ones to beat.

While the previous rounds have all been tough so far, the difficulty is about to be ramped up once again.

First up it’s the relay invention test – which sees the semi-finalists split into two groups of four and having to cook a dish together. The twist? The contestants have 20 minutes each to contribute to their team’s dish, and they’re not allowed to write instructions for the person who’ll be taking the next stint.

Wednesday’s episode will see the teams hopping aboard HMS Northumberland to prepare lunch for the Royal Navy, while on Thursday they’ll be headed into a professional kitchen where mistakes won’t be tolerated.

Most fearful of all will be Friday’s test: having to impress the dreaded food critics with their culinary offerings.

Whoever makes it into the next round from here will certainly have earned it.
