Mary Berry has broken her silence since quitting The Great British Bake Off, saying the show will be ‘successful’ on Channel 4.

Berry, 81, fronted the BBC show with Paul Hollywood for six years but quit her judging role when Love Productions – the company behind the popular baking show – accepted a mega money deal to move to a rival broadcaster.

Berry said she left over a “loyalty” to the BBC just days after hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins quit – but Hollywood opted to make the move to Channel 4.

Speaking at the National Reality TV Awards, Berry told The Sun: “It’s going to be different but I’m sure Paul will carry it on successfully.”

She continued: “Mel and Sue are brilliant and we had a marvellous time on the programme and that’s how it will remain.

“You’ll never hear people swear. It’s a family programme. Mum, gran, everyone enjoys it and they all get down to baking afterwards. I’m proud of everyone. It gets 14 million – more than the football!”

Viewers defended Berry on Wednesday's episode when contestant Candice Brown appeared to call the baking queen a "tart".

Berry was judging Candice’s lime, lemongrass and coconut pie with green swirls for botanical week when the alleged incident occurred.

"The actual curd itself is a very good flavour," Berry said.

Happy with the response Candice replied: "Thank you… tart."

Viewers reacted in shock and branded her "rude" while another joked that she should be "sent to the Tower".

The Great British Bake Off is on BBC One at 8pm on Wednesday.
