Marcel Somerville has offered some words of advice for the new Love Island contestants, who he thinks may not be on the show purely to find love.

The Blazin’ Squad star shot back into the limelight after appearing on last year’s success of the summer, coupling up with Gabby Allen – finishing fourth – from whom he recently split.

And now Somerville has some key advice for their singletons headed into the villa this summer, telling them to “own it”, although he questioned whether the "hysteria" of the show is the main attraction.

Speaking to Standard Online and other media at the Virgin TV BAFTAs on Sunday, he said: “Just be confident on the show and just own it.

“They’re going to throw things in there to mess with your head and like make you stress. But if you can just own it, you’ll make it through.”

However, Somerville admitted that he doesn’t know if finding love will be a top priority for this year’s contestants after the show propelled so many to reality stardom last year.

He explained: “In all honestly, Love Island as a show is an amazing thing to do.

“You can go on Love Island and there are prospects that you can find someone you are really suited with but, at the same time, I think with the way that our show blew up this year, people trying to get on it are not going to be on it to find love.

“They’re going to be going on Love Island because of the hysteria that comes with it.”

The fourth series of the revamped show, set to return to the network soon, enjoyed strong ratings last year as millions watched the likes of Amber Davies, Kem Cetinay, Chris Hughes and Olivia Attwood fall in love.

Caroline Flack will once again host the show, expected to return to ITV2 next month.
