Helen Mirren has spoken about Alan Rickman’s final film role, praising his performance as ‘fantastic’.

Mirren stars alongside the late actor, who died in January this year, in new thriller film Eye in the Sky.

“He is fantastic,” she said on the Graham Norton Show. “It was his last film and it’s a movie he would be very proud of.

“What I love about the film is that it’s Alan as I knew Alan – a brilliant character actor, funny, urbane, intelligent and very human. It’s really great to see him up there.”

While Rickman once again voices caterpillar Absolem in Disney’s forthcoming Alice Through The Looking Glass adaptation, Eye in the Sky will be the actor’s final non-voice role.

Eye in the Sky is a political thriller about the use of drone warfare in the fight against terrorism, with Mirren starring as Colonel Katherine Powell.

“I think the director very astutely understood that by making it a woman the film couldn’t easily be dismissed as a sort of macho boys movie about war,” Mirren said. “Making it a woman really opens up the philosophical discussion about what we are prepared to do in war much more deeply.”
