Halloween on Netflix: Seven spooky series and films to watch this weekend

The spookiest day of the year is fast approaching and Netflix has the perfect content for your Halloween binge-fest.

Whether it’s a scary series to catch your fancy or a horror film, there is something for everyone on the popular streaming service.

So come on then. Grab your fancy dress, and maybe a pillow to hide behind, and break out the skull-shaped candy and cakes .

Here are seven top picks for Halloween….

The Haunting of Hill House

The 10-part series is a reimagining of the novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson about five siblings who grew up in a famous haunted house. They’re reunited in the wake of the youngest sister’s suicide, forcing them to confront the ghosts of their past and find their way back to Hill House.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The dark coming-of-age drama is available on Netflix now, having landed in its entirety yesterday.

Years after Sabrina The Teenage Witch, there is a new Sabrina Spellman in town as Kiernan Shipka takes over the mantle from Melissa Joan Hart in the spooky story, itself a spin-off from the Archie comics (just like Riverdale).

Sabrina is faced with her dual natures – being both a witch and a mortal – while seeking to protect herself and loves ones from evil threatening her, her family and reality.

Stranger Things

Another Netflix original sure to leave you on edge is the extraordinary world of Stranger Things. The first series, set in Indiana in 1983, sees locals drawn into the mystery surrounding a vanishing young boy. And it soon becomes clear that supernatural forces are at work.

The second series, set one year later, has the residents still very much dealing with their recent discoveries before a bigger threat is lurking just around the corner.

Carrie

The 1976 film, adapted from Stephen King’s 1974 novel of the same name, stars Sissy Spacek as the titular character, a 17-year-old girl who finds herself the butt of jokes at high school.

All that changes one day when Carrie discovers telekinetic powers allowing her to seek revenge on those pranking her with horrifying consequences.

The Cabin in the Woods

The 2012 horror film starring Chris Hemsworth has all the components of a spooky classic as five friends go to a remote cabin in the, er, woods but get a bit more than they bargained for when they unearth a whole lot more about their holiday spot.

American Horror Story

The hit show is available in its entirety, bar the eight series currently airing, is available to binge in all its bloody gore.

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series is a must-see for anybody who loves the horror genre, with each season telling a different story.

Sacrifice

While the new Derren Brown series may not scream Halloween at first glance, the illusionist’s experiment is sure to give you the creeps. The Netflix special features unsuspecting participant Phil joining in a fake medical trial to improve his bravery and his empathy before he faces a massive decision – take a bullet for a stranger or save himself?
