Great British Bake Off viewers were stunned when Ruby Bhogal suffered a major disaster during Vegan Week as her two-tiered cake collapsed.

After finishing the special week’s showstopper, during which the bakers could only used plant-based ingredients for their celebration cakes, the remaining six left the tent to get some fresh air.

But the bakers watched in horror as Ruby’s chocolate, lemon and coconut cake tumbled down from the baking stand.

Presenter Noel Fielding delivered the heartbreaking dessert news to Ruby, who burst into tears with her head in her hands.

And viewers were feeling equally distraught for the 29-year-old, who had struggled throughout the challenges during week seven.

One wrote: “Well that was awful to watch. Got no nails left. Poor Ruby #GBBO”

Another said: “Collective national yelp as Ruby’s cake collapses #gbbo.”

“Feel so bad on Ruby omg #GBBO,” commented somebody else.

But some redeeming news came for Ruby when judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood enjoyed the cake, with Leith branding it “delicious”.

Elsewhere, Jon Jenkins became the latest baker to leave the tent after failing to impressing with his Vegan creations, talking openly about his preference for a “kebab week”.

The 47-year-old Welshman and meat-eater was defeated by the challenge of producing plant-based bakes, with his showstopper branded "hideous" by Hollywood.

He said: "My real downfall this week was the Signature, that is what finished me off, and I won't be turning vegan soon that's for sure. I didn't think a vegetable would prove to be my nemesis, but the vegan gods got to me.

"As a self-confessed meat-eater I have only ever cooked one vegan meal in my life. I am very patriotic and managed to get a bit of Wales in nearly every episode. I couldn't get any of Wales in Vegan Week and that's probably where I went wrong."

Week seven of the competition marked a first for the show with a Vegan Week, swapping eggs and flour for plant-based ingredients.

The episode kicked-off, as ever, with the signature challenge which saw the bakers tasked with preparing eight savoury tartlets – four with one filling and four with another – with a short crust pastry.

The Great British Bake Off continues On Channel 4 with the quarter finals, next Tuesday at 8pm.
