Great British Bake Off fans were in tears as Terry Hartill opened up about his wife’s death during his emotional exit interview.

The retired air steward left the tent after a disappointing Spice Week, along with pal Karen Wright, in a double elimination by judge Paul Hollywood.

And Terry had fans welling up and he broke down while explaining how baking had “filled the void” after losing his wife to cancer.

Tearing up on camera, Terry said: “I said I wouldn't get upset. It's funny when you're on your own... my wife and I were very happy and that was a massive loss.

"There wasn't anything to fill the void for a very long time so it's given me a focus. I've met some lovely people I'm sure we'll keep in touch for a very long time.”

He continued to say that the show had been a “big help” and that he wasn’t going to give up baking, adding that he was “looking forward to more projects”.

But fans, who loved Terry from week one, were beside themselves with emotion, praising Terry for speaking so beautifully about a tough time.

One wrote: "Think I just heard the nations heart shatter into pieces simultaneously hearing Terry talk about loosing his wife on #GBBO."

While another said: “Terry straight up just broke my heart. Will miss him on #gbbo.”

“Terry got me balling like a massive baby #gbbo,” sobbed somebody else.

Others called for a petition to get Terry back on the show, either as a contestant wildcard or even a mascot.

The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesday’s at 8pm on Channel 4.
