Throw away the eggs and butter because Bake Off is going vegan.

The remaining six bakers will turn to vegan-friendly ingredients as they try to get to grips with making a pasty without any butter tonight.

Although the content of the week has changed, the format of the competition still remains with three challenges standing in between the bakers and a spot in next week’s quarter final.

Here is what to expect ahead of tonight's Bake Off first…

Why is there a Vegan Week?

Hollywood said: “We wanted something different to represent what's happening in this country. Veganism is something that seems to be growing. We wanted to represent that on Bake Off this year and that's why it's in.”

Hollywood added that he judged the week fairly and properly despite not being a vegan himself, adding that he finds it “fascinating” – although he admits in the episode he does not have a cookbook ready to go.

What can we expect from Vegan Week?

The episode kicks-off, as ever, with the signature challenge which will see the bakers tasked with preparing eight savoury tartlets – four with one filling and four with another – with a short crust pastry.

For their showstopper, the bakers must whip up a vegan celebration cake that is “inventive and visually exciting”. There aren’t any stipulations – the cake can look however the contestants want – but it must be made from plant-based ingredients.

The pressure proves too much for almost all of the contestants with many taking breathers outside. But disaster strikes for one baker leaving them in a panic.

The Great British Bake Off is on Channel 4, tonight at 8pm
