Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins became firm Great British Bake Off favourites for their hilarious puns and double entendres – and they took things to the next level in the latest episode.

The quarter final of the 2016 series saw the bakers take on Tudor Week – with tasks including hot water crust pastry pies, and marzipan puddings.

The theme inspired all kinds of history gags, with Mel and Sue packing their repartee with references to Henry VIII’s many wives.

It proved a particularly fruitful topic for the presenters, who were certainly, erm, game for a laugh.

Viewers shared their delight on Twitter, with one labelling it the ‘best episode ever’ for Mel and Sue’s input.

It hit even harder that Mel and Sue will be leaving at the end of the current series, when the show will move from the BBC to Channel 4.

The episode saw Candice receive star baker for her stunning peacock-shaped showstopper, while – spoiler alert! – Benjamina was sent home after struggling with the Tudor-themed bakes.

Emotional about her departure from the show, she said: “Quarter-finalist… I think once it sinks in I’ll be like, actually I’ve done something really, really cool.

“To get this far in itself is an achievement, so I’m really proud.”

Next week’s semi-final will see the remaining four contestants – Candice, Selasi, Jane, and Andrew – take on patisserie challenges, competing for a place in the final episode.
