Candice Brown has won the latest series of the Great British Bake Off.

The 31 year-old PE teacher came out on top in a close-run final, ahead of competitors Andrew Smyth and Jane Beedle.

“Never ever, ever thought I’d ever even get on this, and I’m standing here now with this,” Brown said after winning.

“They said my name, and that means more to me than I think anyone will ever, ever realise. It really, really does.”

Mary Berry praised Brown's 'wonderful flavours'.

“Her determination and passion, she really has excelled," she said. "Wonderful flavours, and everything always looked gorgeous.”

Explaining why Candice deserved the win, Paul Hollywood said: “Candice is very much all or nothing, when you look back on some of her bakes they’ve been beautiful. When she nails it, she’s one of the best.”

Candice and Jane excelled in the opening signature round, with their royal-inspired meringue crowns both earning them a ‘Hollywood handshake’ from judge Paul.

Andrew didn’t receive a handshake for his effort – leaving him on the back foot going into the next round.

However, the technical challenge – making a classic Victoria sponge with no instructions whatsoever – saw Andrew come out on top, with Candice’s cake in second, and Jane’s in last place.

The hugely ambitious showstopper round saw the finalists tasked with creating no less than 49 items – including sausage rolls, cream tarts, scones, mini quiches, and chocolate cakes.

Jane received mixed comments for her creations, with Mary praising her cream tarts, but claiming that she could not taste the butternut squash in her scones.

Andrew’s meticulously presented picnic range received similar feedback, with mixed comments on his sausage rolls and scones, but praise for his chocolate cake.

Candice’s hamper fared better, with acclaim for her sausage rolls and her chocolate cake.

The series marks the last time the Great British Bake Off will be on the BBC. From 2017, the show will be moving to Channel 4 without Mary Berry, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
