A lot of comic book fans pride themselves on their encyclopaedic knowledge of all things DC, Marvel, and beyond.

While TV series Gotham might not be the most typical take on the mythology of Batman, don’t think that the cast don’t know their stuff.

Speaking to London Live, Sean Pertwee showed a vast array of knowledge about Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred Pennyworth, digging deep into obscure facts about the character he portrays in the show.

The actor also talked up the show’s more action-focused take on Alfred, compared to the more sedate versions often seen on-screen as played by the likes of Michael Caine and Michael Gough.

“It’s great being allowed to give that other sort of aspect to Alfred, which I think that people now understand,” Pertwee revealed. “The brilliant Geoff Johns from DC Comics who writes the Earth One novels, his Alfred’s got one leg, which I’m quite pleased that we didn’t go down that road.

“They hinted on the fact that he’s a badass in the special services, and he teaches Bruce initially how to fight and to defend himself, and teaches him in the sense of a code of morals.”

The second series of Gotham, currently airing on Channel 5, continues the exploits of a fresh-faced Detective Gordon as he traverses the city’s infamous criminal underworld, while the rogue’s gallery of villains rises in the shadows.
