Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin has bid farewell to the HBO TV series with an emotional blog post.

The author reflected on the how the small screen adaptation has shaped his life over the past decade, describing the process as a “wild ride” and sharing his disbelief that it has come to an end.

“After eight epic seasons, HBO’s GAME OF THRONES series has come to an end. It is hard to believe it is over, if truth be told,” he wrote on his blog.

“The years have gone past in the blink of an eye. Can it really have been more than a decade since my manager Vince Gerardis set up a meeting at the Palm in LA, and I sat down for the first time with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for a lunch that lasted well past dinner?

“I asked them if they knew who Jon Snow’s mother was. Fortunately, they did.”

The writer went on to pay tribute to the show’s talented cast and crew, writing: “We had some amazing people working on this show, as all those Emmys bear witness.”

Martin did not allude to the mixed fan response that the final season has prompted, including the viewer-led petition for HBO to re-make the eight episodes “with competent writers” that boasts over one million signatories.

He went on to remind fans of the franchise that there are still further instalments to come, as he is currently working on The Winds on Winter.

"And I’m writing. Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is,” he added. “THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done.”

He refused to give a definitive release date as “I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself,” but reaffirmed his determination to finish the book, and promised another novel, A Dream of Spring.

“I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING.

“I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had eight hours for this final season.”

He said that the final two books are expected to “fill 3,000 manuscript pages between them.”

Game of Thrones season eight is available to stream on demand on NOW TV and Sky Go.
