Eamonn Holmes will make his breakfast television return as he joins Good Morning Britain.

The former king of morning TV, who hosted GM:TV and Sky News Sunrise, will step in to replace Piers Morgan while he takes a break over the Easter period.

Holmes will be reunited with Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins on the sofa next week, admitting that he is happy to be back on his ‘old stomping ground’.

“After the last four months of lie-ins, I feel refreshed and my hips have healed well,” Holmes said on Monday morning.

“Breakfast TV is what I’m best known for so it’s nice to be back doing a short spell of early starts and to be back at my old stomping ground.”

Good Morning Britian editor, Neil Thompson said: “Eamonn and I worked together on the very first edition of GMTV on the 1st January 1993.

“He’s a phenomenal broadcaster and journalist and it’s great to be able to work with him again on Good Morning Britain this Easter.”

Holmes was the face of ITV’s GM:TV for over a decade in the 1990s, hosting the show alongside Fiona Phillips.

He left the station in 2005 to join the Sky breakfast team, where he stayed for 11 years before leaving in 2016.

In his statement announcing his departure last September, he said: "I cannot stress how hard it is saying goodbye to such a programme and the friends and colleagues who I have met over the years because of it - but nothing stays the same - nor should it.

"New studios mean a wonderful chance for new ideas and a new approach with new presenters. I hope they enjoy and respect the privilege of hosting Sunrise and waking up Britain and the world as much as I have."

Holmes will host Good Morning Britain from April 10-13.
