Britain’s Got Talent’s latest golden buzzer recipients have revealed what went on backstage on the day of their audition.

Mother-daughter singing duo Honey and Sammy wowed the judges with their tear-jerker performance of Freya Riding’s Lost Without You on Saturday’s show, with Amanda Holden pushing her golden buzzer - but the pair barely knew the song before singing it.

After their initial choice of song didn’t sit well with Simon Cowell, the judge chose Riding’s song himself, they have told Standard Online.

“We had to learn a new song - because the song was actually Simon's choice - learn a new song, learn the arrangement, learn the melody lines, learn the harmonies, or make up the harmonies even, and learn the words - five things to do in 15 minutes,” said Sammy, 43. “It's inconceivable that we actually didn't make a mistake.”

“I was fine about it,” added Honey, 14. “It was scary, but you just have to get on with it. I wasn’t nervous.”

Sammy, who auditioned on her 43rd birthday, had the lyrics to the song written on her hand (in permanent marker, no less; she had to tell people it was a shopping list when the words wouldn’t rub off for two weeks).

Being so focused on not forgetting the words, her and Honey say they “didn’t even contemplate” that the golden buzzer could be coming their way.

“We didn't even think about it,” said Sammy. “We were just really concerned with me not messing up the words. To receive a golden buzzer was just - it's unbelievable, it's all the words you can imagine: shock, disbelief, so happy, so grateful, totally shocked.”

Honey says it was a “miracle” she could even sing that day - right up to the day before the audition, she’d been suffering from crippling laryngitis that left her barely able to speak.

“On the car journey, mum was like, ‘Should we do some warm ups?’” said Honey. “But I was too scared that it was going to wreck my voice. We literally just went on with no practise.”

But there was no need to worry. their audition won the judges over, who were further struck by the fact that Sammy had recovered from cancer, which she says she had largely kept quiet from people in her life.

Amanda, who granted the coveted golden buzzer, said Honey reminded her of her daughter.

“She's our favourite,” said Sammy. “She's a beautiful person inside and out and, she just had such lovely things to say to us, and we're just very grateful.”

And what viewers didn’t get to see on screen, says Sammy, was a rousing performance of happy birthday from the audience.

“After we received the golden buzzer and Amanda and come on stage and hugged us, the entire auditorium just erupted in a rendition of Happy Birthday for me,” said Sammy.

“That's unreal, 3000 people singing Happy Birthday to you. There’s just no words - it's so amazing.”

Britain's Got Talent continues on Saturday at 8pm.
