8.16 million viewers tuned in for the Britain’s Got Talent finale, which saw Chelsea Pensioner Colin Thackery crowned this year’s winner.
Sunday night’s live final drew a peak audience of 9 million to vastly outstrip competition on other channels, with BBC One’s Gentleman Jack recording an average of 3.85 million viewers.
Though the talent show finale now ranks among the most-watched TV shows of 2019, viewing figures are slightly down on last year’s concluding episode.
The 2018 final, in which comedian Lost Voice Guy was swept to victory by the public vote, had an average of 8.7 million viewers with a peak of 10 million.
Thackery, who won over viewers by dedicating his emotional performances to his late wife, received 25.3 per cent of the public vote.
Magician X came in second place, gaining a 17.8 per cent share of the final vote.
The masked figure finally revealed his true identity as last year’s hopeful Marc Spellman during his captivating performance.
Other stand out performances included Flakefleet Primary School’s heartwarming rendition of Take That’s Rule The World and magician Ben Hart’s mind-boggling tricks.
BBC police drama Line of Duty is still the biggest TV hit of 2019, after the show’s gripping finale drew in nine million viewers last month.
The Jed Mercurio series gained an average audience of 9.1 million (an audience share of 44.1 per cent) with peaks of 9.6 million during its feature length final episode, with viewers tuning in to learn the identity of corrupt officer H.
