New ITV detective drama Bancroft had viewers switching on the subtitles after they struggled to hear the show due to poor sound quality.

Fans of the show, which stars Broadchurch’s Sarah Parish as a troubled detective, complained of actors’ mumbling, calling it ‘an effort’ to understand what was being said.

One wrote: “Sarah Parish’s mumbling terrible – have to have sub titles on.”

While another commented: “Standard @itv crap sound quality and mumbling. #Bancroft,” and a third said: “#Bancroft such an effort to hear what they are saying. Not sure if it's mumbling or just poor sound".

But one viewer, who hadn’t struggled to hear the programme, thought they’d uncovered the real reason behind the complaints.

“I swear people turn down the volume when they watch a new drama just in the hope that their tweet makes it into the inevitable ‘viewers complain about mumbling’ articles. #Bancroft,” they suggested.

And that wasn’t the end of viewers’ issues with the new series. Some felt its story line was very similar to another thriller which featured a corrupt police officer trying to save her reputation.

“#Bancroft feels like a poor man’s Line of Duty,” posted one.

“This #bancroft thing am I wrong or haven’t they just ripped off that @thandienewton drama which had us all gripped last year [sic]?” tweeted another.

Bancroft continues Wednesday, December 13 at 9pm on ITV.
