The Crown and Line of Duty will go head-to-head at this year’s BAFTA TV Awards after scooping nominations in four of the top categories.

Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, has been nominated for Leading Actress for her role in Netflix drama The Crown which has picked up three nominations, including Drama Series.

The British actress – who will hand over the reign to Olivia Colman next series – will face tough competition from Three Girls star Molly Windsor, Little Boy Blue’s Sinead Keenan and Line of Duty’s Thandie Newton.

The BBC police drama has scooped four gongs including Drama Series, Supporting Actor for Adrian Dunbar and Virgin TV’s Must-See Moment which is voted for by the British public.

The Leading Actor category will see Jack Rowan (Born to Kill), Joe Cole (Black Mirror), Sean Bean (Broken) and Timothy Pigott-Smith (King Charles III) battle it out for the coveted gong.

Ant and Dec are up for two Entertainment Programme gongs for Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Britain’s Got Talent. Declan Donnelly has been forced to front the remaining episodes of Saturday Night Takeaway alone after Ant McPartlin announced his return to rehab.

Big Little Lies will no doubt continue its awards season haul, picking up a nomination for International Series. The hit adaptation, which stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, will go up against Feud: Bette and Joan, The Handmaid’s Tale and The Vietnam War.

BBC ballroom favourite Strictly Come Dancing was among this year's snubs, as well as EastEnders which missed out on a nod for Soap and Continuing Drama to Casualty, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.

Sue Perkins – who took over from Graham Norton last year – said she is “chuffed” to be returning as host.

“I am genuinely thrilled to be invited back,” she said.

“It’s a real pleasure to be the master of ceremonies once more, as we celebrate the very best in British television.”

The ceremony will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, May 13.
