Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now the highest-grossing Broadway play ever

1/18

Broadway audiences have been left spellbound by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, where it is now the highest-grossing non-musical play of all time.

The magical two-part production, created by Jack Thorne and John Tiffany alongside the book’s author JK Rowling, began performances at the Lyric Theatre on March 16 this year, following phenomenal success in the West End.

Since that time it has raked in $75.8 million in box office receipts, and $2 million a week, according to figures from the Broadway league.

The show picks up 19 years after Rowling’s final book, following Potter’s progress as an adult working at the Ministry of Magic and his son Albus’s arrival at Hogwarts.

It’s not the first time that the show has broken records; in 2017, it picked up nine Olivier Awards , making it the most decorated production in the awards’ history. This year it picked up six Tony Awards including best play.

Most of the original West End cast, including Jamie Parker, Noma Dumezweni and Anthony Boyle , are currently reprising their roles in the Broadway production.

In the West End, the show continues to play to sold out audiences at the Palace Theatre, whilst productions are set to open in Melbourne and San Francisco next year.
