ES

Welcome to this week’s episode of The Standard Theatre Podcast!

Coming up on this week’s show, our chief theatre critic Nick Curtis meets Felicity Huffman to discuss the former Desperate Housewives star’s role in Hir at the Park Theatre.

They also discuss:

-Why she chose a play at one of London’s smallest theatres

-Her early career, Desperate Housewives, and studying at London’s RADA

-Living in the capital again, how the city has changed since Huffman’s twenties, celebrity spotting

-What she hopes audiences will think after seeing Hir

-Will Huffman ever play a character audiences don’t hate?

Nancy and the Nicks review Jez Butterworth and Sam Mendes’s production of The Hills of California at the Harold Pinter Theatre, plus Nick Curtis tells us what he made of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis at the Lyric Hammersmith.

Kafka’s nightmare 1915 story of a man transformed into a monstrous bug becomes a tale of outsider-dom and a critique of capitalism in Lemn Sissay’s meandering, semi-poetic adaptation.

In news:

John Cleese’s adaptation of Fawlty Towers for the West End stage debuts this spring.

The production’s at the Apollo Theatre from May 15, nearly five decades after the sitcom’s first episode was filmed at BBC Television Centre in 1974.

Spiderman star Tom Holland will appear in a new production of Romeo & Juliet, directed by Jamie Lloyd at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

Holland’s career started aged nine when he auditioned for a supporting role in Billy Elliot the Musical and went on to play the lead character.

Cara Delevingne to take on the role of Sally Bowles in Cabaret.

And finally,

The West End shows you shouldn’t see this Valentine’s Day...
