Virtually famous: Lizzo

David Smyth18 January 2019

Chris Martin did his only tweet of the year so far last weekend, taking to the internet to tell Coldplay fans about his favourite songs of the moment.

On a brief list that has now been liked over 23,000 times, he recommended a few obvious names such as Stormzy and The 1975, but sitting at the top was Juice by Lizzo.

The singer/rapper/flautist from Detroit, 30, has been on the scene for a while – she released independent albums in 2013 and 2015 and made a prestigious guest appearance on Prince’s 2014 album Plectrumelectrum – but this looks like her breakthrough moment. The climate is certainly right for a plus-size woman of colour singing about how gorgeous she is. The song, released a fortnight ago, is a joyous ode to body positivity that begins, “Mirror mirror on the wall, don’t say it ‘cause I know I’m cute,” and has a similar retro funk sound to another massive hit, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk.

A smile-inducing video that parodies workout videos and shopping channel enthusiasm hit a million YouTube views in no time, and Lizzo looks well on the way to acquiring many more celebrity fans.
