Harry Kane got the hat-trick for England – but can Three Lions do the triple and top the charts?

David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds’ 1996 hit looks set to return to the Top 40 as World Cup fever heats up ahead of England’s quarter-final match against Sweden.

The football anthem has surged up to number 35 on the Official UK Singles chart following England’s historic penalty shoot-out win against Colombia on Tuesday night.

The single, which features the famous lyric “football’s coming home,” also reached an all-time high with over 450,000 plays globally on Spotify.

Three Lions took the number one spot for two weeks on its release in 1996. It was rerecorded with different lyrics under the title 3 Lions '98 in 1998 for the World Cup in France and spent three weeks at the top spot.

The song is one of the UK’s best-selling singles of all time, with both versions combined having sold 1.6 million.

Baddiel and Skinner left fans feeling nostalgic as they gave a nod to the song while celebrating together on Tuesday night.

The comedy duo posted a picture of themselves sitting on Baddiel’s sofa alongside the caption: “It’s just about still coming home.”
