From grime to Glennie - it's all to be found in this week's guide to the Proms.

Friday August 7

Prom 29: Stravinsky, Messiaen, Ravel and Mozart, 18:30

Six pieces from four different composers begin this week’s guide. It includes the world premiere of ‘Un oiseau des arbres de Vie’, the recently unearthed work which was intended to be part of Messiaen’s ‘Éclairs sur l’au-delà’.

Prom 30: The John Wilson Orchestra performs Frank Sinatra, 22:15

Seth Macfarlane is a man of many artistic pursuits, and here he showcases his vocal ability while helping to celebrate the work of Frank Sinatra, who would be celebrating his 100th birthday this year.

Saturday August 8

Proms Saturday Matinee 2: B’Rock, 15:00*

A programme of Italian music from the 1700s, including Vivaldi, Geminiani and Caldara, will be played at Cadogan Hall, with Baroque orchestra B’Rock making its Proms debut.

Prom 31: National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, 19:30

This one of the unmissable Proms highlights picked by the Standard’s critic, Barry Millington. He writes: “Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, under the dependable baton of Mark Elder, will plumb the depths of the composer’s premonitions of death but Tansy Davies’s Re-greening, written specifically to precede it, offers hope and new life in the form of springtime shoots.”

Sunday August 9

Prom 32: Eric Whitacre and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, 15:30

The crowd will be able to get fully involved with this Prom. Download the Deep Field smartphone app (named after Eric Whitacre’s recent work) and you will be able to contribute the sound of rainfall.

Prom 33: Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, 20:00

Sir John Eliot Gardiner returns as conductor, this time alongside the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique to play through Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Berlioz’s grandiose Symphonie Fantastique.

Monday 10 August

Proms Chamber Music 4: Dame Evelyn Glennie, 13:00*

The famed percussionist celebrates her 50th birthday by starring in a diverse and exciting concert, with the newly invented aluphone instrument coming to the Proms for the first time.

Prom 34: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, 19:30

The Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti plays alongside the Bournemouth Symphony, with three grand, evocative pieces from Britten, Korngold and Prokofiev making sure of a delicious Prom.

Tuesday 11 August

Prom 35: Story of Swing, 19:30

The tale of swing’s beginnings are told by this Prom, while also showcasing some of the most notable talents in jazz and big band today. Guy Barker and Winston Rollins conduct their respective ensembles.

Wednesday 12 August

Prom 36: Pierre Boulez, Ravel and Stravinsky, 18:30

Stravinsky’s striking ballet, The Firebird, will finish proceedings on a high note, but the start will be fantastic too, with fine pieces from Boulez and Ravel.

Prom 37: Late Night With… BBC Radio 1Xtra, 22:15

The late night Proms, which add an invigorating difference to the season, have been well-received so far. This time, the Albert Hall will be taken over by grime and hip-hop. Wretch 32, Stormzy and Lethal Bizzle lead the bill.

Thursday 13 August

Prom 38: Messiaen – Turangalîla Symphony, 19:30

One of Foulds’ best works, Three Mantras, will get an airing here, before Messiaen’s epic, mythically-inspired Turangalîla Symphony.
