Aisling Bea, Gilded Balloon - comedy review

One thing that makes the Edinburgh Fringe worthwhile is the emergence of a new talent. This year the name creating a buzz has been Aisling Bea. The immensely amiable Irish stand-up has already won smaller awards for smaller shows but her full-length debut, C'est La Bea, is a masterclass in high-impact entertainment.

There is no political subtext, apart from an aside about body image. This is simply full-on heady fun as Bea races through her CV. She tells silver-tongued tales about growing up — “we had clothes made of mud” — and teen snogging before lobbing in hula hooping, penny whistle work and flirtatious audience banter.

Expect at least a Foster’s Award Newcomer nomination when the shortlist is announced on Wednesday.
