A petition is calling on Nintendo and Animal Crossing: New Horizons to add more inclusive hairstyles is gaining support.

Created on Thursday, June 25, the petition has already garnered over 17,000 signatures.

Taniesha Bracken, who started the petition, is asking Nintendo to make an effort to add new inclusive hairstyles available to players when they create a character.

"Every person should feel represented when playing a game they love and making their avatar. Ethnic hairstyles are often forgotten," explains Bracken.

She goes on to explain that this petition has been started in direct consequence to current events, specifically regarding racial injustice in America.

"In light of what is happening in America concerning black rights, it would be amazing to have gamers of all races represented on all gaming platforms. Let's start with Animal Crossing!"

Animal Crossing does already include a large variety of different hairstyles, but some people are suggesting that there simply isn't enough for people who are wanting to create a more detailed version of themselves in the game.

You can check out the petition here.

Granted, not everyone wants to make themselves appear in the game via their avatar, but it would be a good step for those who can't choose a solid representation of their hairstyle.

A lot of people have given a reason for their signing of the petition, with one saying: "I’d love to see an Animal Crossing update where everyone can style their character's hair just the way they like it. Also, hijabs/headscarves please?"

Another said: "Why should I find my exact hair when others can't? This game is for everybody, and that means everybody deserves representation".

We've contacted Nintendo for a comment on the petition and will update the piece with a response.

Elsewhere in the world of Animal Crossing, peoples are being treated to another free update coming on July 3 which will add in swimming, diving and new NPCs.
