Streetdance 3D boldly goes where America has gone before

10 April 2012

Streetdance (which, as the title subtly suggests, is shot in 3D) is being hyped as the first British dance movie. In other words, it’s going where a gazillion American movies have gone before.

Nichola Burley stars as Northern, driven Carly, forced by an idiosyncratic teacher (Charlotte Rampling) to work with five ballet dancers so her London crew will have a chance of winning the UK Street Dancing Championships. It’s immediately obvious that Burley is no dancer. The horrible surprise is that she’s not much of an actress, either. She pales next to a real B-girl like Lil Steph, a born slippy mover, in a tiny role as a member of Carly’s crew. Dance troupe Flawless are also mesmerising, their shivery acrobatics expertly showcased by pop promo directors Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini.
