Sex Pistols keep filth at a low

They may be well into their forties but at least one member of the Sex Pistols kept the rebellious spirit of punk rock alive at the premiere of a documentary about the band's "glory" days.

Guitarist Steve Jones, who flew in hours earlier from California for the screening of The Filth And The Fury despite being laid low by kidney stones, celebrated by relieving himself out of a pub window.

It was a rare glimpse of the old days as Jones and drummer Paul Cook were reunited with fellow ageing punks at the Screen-on-the-Green in Islington, one of the few London venues that allowed them to play at the height of their notoriety in the mid-Seventies.

Sadly the gathering did not include singer John Lydon - Johnny Rotten as he was then - who was struck down with laryngitis.

Bass guitarist Glen Matlock was also missing, along with his more celebrated replacement Sid Vicious, who died of a drugs overdose in 1979, leaving only half the band to lead the reunion. Guests with memories of the era, including Boy George, actor Ray Winstone and former Altered Images star Clare Grogan, mingled beforehand at the Slug and Lettuce pub, along with one pop superstar of a later vintage, Robbie Williams.

Back in the day, of course, the Pistols would have scoffed at the presence of a former boy-band member, but they could not even summon up an insult for him. Time seems to have mellowed them, their personal habits apart.
