This year has already been huge for film, with Avengers: Endgame smashing box office records all over the world — May, it seems, will be no different.

Film fans can look forward to new thrillers, blockbuster comedies and biopics this month, as well as one extremely disturbing — but extremely hyped — release.

Zac Efron’s Ted Bundy movie Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil & Vile is the first major project of the month, arriving on May 3. It’s only receiving a limited release in the UK, so make sure you catch it in cinemas while you can. It tells the story of one of the most horrific serial killers in history.

Elsewhere, Ryan Reynolds voices a sardonic Pikachu in the irreverent and intriguing looking Pokemon Detective Pikachu — it could well turn out to be one of the most successful offbeat releases of the year.

If yellow's not your colour, try Will Smith in Aladdin, who's looking blue as the Genie in the live-action retreading of the Disney favourite. Action fans should turn to Keanu Reeves, who returns to the hugely successful shoot-em-up series John Wick.

These are seven must-see films to seek out in May.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil & Vile (May 3)

The story of notorious US serial killer Ted Bundy is told from the perspective of his partner Liz Kendall in this much-anticipated drama, starring Lily Collins. The movie premieres on Sky Cinema on May 3, but also receives a limited theatrical release.

Vox Lux (May 3)

Natalie Portman is a Gaga-esque pop megastar in this critically lauded movie, which explores the private lives of a troubled musician. Jude Law also stars in the film, which has been hailed by some critics as one of the finest films of the year.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu (May 10)

Ryan Reynolds voices a wisecracking Pikachu, who helps Justice Smith to solve a baffling crime involving the disappearance of his father in this fun, live-action animation hybrid. This adaptation of the 2016 video game might just be the movie you didn’t realise you needed in your life.

Tolkien (May 10)

JRR Tolkien, the man behind Middle Earth, is the subject of this new biopic starring Nicholas Hoult and and Lily Collins. The movie follows the author in his student days at Oxford and his experiences in WWI, before developing the ideas that would become the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (May 17)

The sharpest action franchise of recent years returns on May 17, with Keanu Reeves returning to the role of hitman John Wick for the third time. Expect more incredible set-pieces, edge of the seat tension and general badass behaviour.

Aladdin (May 24)

Disney rolls out its latest live-action reboot this month, with Will Smith given the unenviable task of stepping into Robin Williams’ shows as the Genie. Discover a whole new world when the reboot arrives in cinemas on May 24.

Rocketman (May 31)

Biopics are the order of the month for May, it seems, and Elton John is the latest star to have their story told on the big screen. Kingsman star Taron Egerton plays the singer-songwriter, appearing alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Madden, Stephen Graham and Jamie Bell.
