One laugh per hour in How Do You Know

10 April 2012

Neither Reese Witherspoon nor Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, to say nothing of Jack Nicholson, is able to transcend the woodenness of the characters they play in James L Brooks's rom-com.

Witherspoon plays a softball international, now retired and wondering what to do with herself apart from bedding Wilson's millionaire baseball pitcher and keeping Rudd's troubled businessman on a hook. The businessman's father (Nicholson) is in trouble for bribery on a massive scale and he is blamed. Nicholson has a few good moments but that's in a screenplay that has about one laugh per half hour.
