Coming soon to a cinema near you...

10 April 2012
High concept

Plot Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey with Laurie Holden), a blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter, loses his memory and comes to in an American small town, where the residents claim him as one of their own, Luke Trimble. And before you can say 'apple pie', Luke is mucking in and helping re-open the disused moviehouse, The Majestic, thus allowing residents to 'dream again'.

Frank, meet frank Though the movie's an obvious homage to Preston Sturges's Hail The Conquering Hero, it's also evident that director Frank Shawshank Redemption Darabont is out to plunder the feelgood of Frank Capra. A dangerous path - Capra's films were dubbed 'Capracorn' even while he was making them.

Jingle smells Like Carrey's last film, The Grinch, The Majestic has got Christmas written all over it. But will audiences over here be quite so indulgent come cherry blossom time?

Cash and Carrey Real Carrey fans will be wondering whatever happened to Mr Hughes, the 2000 film directed by Christopher Memento Nolan about the life of the billionaire Howard Hughes. The film, like the man, has become very elusive.

Verdicts 'A derivative fable that couldn't be more simple-minded if it tried' - Los Angeles Times.'Carrey gets the best role of his career, and plays it with tenderness and bravery' - New York Observer.

Internet Movie Database rating 6.9/10.
