Austin's powers of persuasion

Standard Reporter10 April 2012

Mike Myers resisted the chance of dressing up as Austin Powers for the world premiere of the new Goldmember movie and turned up looking like one of the stars of Men In Black. The comedy actor was with wife Robin Ruzon at Universal City in Los Angeles for the screening of the third in the Austin Powers series.

Sir Michael Caine, who arrived with wife Shakira and daughter Natasha, revealed that it was Myers's persuasive powers that got him involved in the project. Sir Michael, who plays Austin's father Nigel, said: "When I saw the first two movies I suspected Austin was based on my character Harry Palmer from The Ipcress Files.

"So when Mike called me and asked me to be his father in this film, he admitted that he based the character on me. The only complaint I have is that he gave me bad teeth!

"Mike said I was one of his father's favourite actors and that clinched it for me. He is a great comic actor and I am proud to be in this movie."

Beyonce Knowles, who plays Foxxy Cleopatra, arrived with her "sisters", fellow Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The 22-year-old said she hoped the film would break box office records.

Gwyneth Paltrow, who has a cameo role, was with her parents Blythe Danner and Bruce Paltrow. There was no sign of the other cameo stars - Britney Spears, Tom Cruise, Ozzy Osbourne, Steven Spielberg and Kevin Spacey.

Spielberg has said he decided to make his appearance after reading the script. He said: "I thought it was hysterical. I normally wouldn't say yes, but the scene was really funny." Tom Cruise described the few hours it took to shoot his piece as "a blast". The film opens in Britain on Friday.
