Rolls-Royce hailed a new jet engine called the Pearl on Tuesday which will enable planes to go “farther, faster, quicker and quieter”.

The Pearl 15 engine will be fitted to Bombardier’s new Global 5500 and Global 6500 business jets used by the super-rich and corporate customers.

On take-off, the engine promises 9% more thrust but will be 2 decibels quieter than Rolls’ current BR700 business jet engine.

The 5500 plane, which costs $46 million, can fly non-stop from Sao Paulo to Paris while the Global 6500 can run from Hong Kong to London but costs $10 million extra.

The planes will enter service by the end of next year. Rolls-Royce shares fell 2% or 18.2p to 825p.

The new engine was developed at Rolls-Royce's factory in Dahlewitz, Germany.

Civil Aerospace president Chris Cholerton said: “Our teams have worked hard behind the scenes to develop this new engine and we are proud, once again, to lead the way in business aviation.”

Rolls-Royce has delivered nearly 1,700 engines to Bombardier since working together.
