Rolls-Royce’s scramble to inspect hundreds of potentially faulty engines on Dreamliner 787 planes around the world will be finished by mid-June, the engineer promised today.

Rolls said last month that it would ramp up checks on 380 engines over problems with engine turbine blades wearing out too quickly.

About two-thirds of the Trent 1000 C series engines have been inspected so far, with the final batch due to complete within the next six weeks.

Airline authorities have cut the amount of time the planes equipped with the engines can be away from an airport from five hours 30 minutes to two hours 20 minutes, causing airline disruptions.

Rolls chief Warren East said: "We sincerely regret any disruption these inspections may cause and we continue to work closely with Boeing, our customers and the regulatory authorities to minimise this.

"In addition to mobilising specialist teams to support these inspections across the globe we have also made significant progress in identifying and developing additional MRO capacity which will enable us to return those engines requiring maintenance more rapidly to our customers."
